Food Galore: 家 (Home) at Rail Mall

Saturday, August 30, 2014

I have been missing from this space for too long. Far too long. Lots of things happened and work is getting crazier as we go into the peak head-on with lots of things undone.

Let me backtrack to a weekend in July with the family to celebrate my brother's birthday (who is now enjoying himself in Taiwan).

New restaurant in the neighborhood!

392 Upper Bukit Timah Road
Rail Mall
Singapore 678042

If you find that guy's face familiar, you are not wrong. He is celebrity chef Tan Yong Hua, who has appeared on numerous television programs. Haha, looks like many celebrity chefs are stepping out of their comfort zone to create something on their own.

If you ask me, I think the setting of the restaurant is a bit too atas to be home. Not a homely feeling.

Peking duck

Haven't had this for sooooo long. The roast duck skin is very crispy, paired with the special popiah skin and sauce, very yummy! Eh… But the meat is kinda little for the price.

Another "not homely" reason.

Sautéed scallops with asparagus

Delicious! Scallops were huge and fresh. I like the crunch of the asparagus and the slightly spicy sauce gave a kick to the whole dish.

Special tofu with crabmeat sauce

I am not a fan of starchy sauces so I just ate the tofu. Smooth, of course. And there were chunky bits of crabmeat in the sauce. Now THAT is what makes it all worthwhile - the crabmeat! LOL. My brother and I are fans of seafood, so we love scallops, prawns, mussels, crabs, cockles, clams, everything under the sea!

Braised pork tendon pot

Another saucy dish. Haha I am not complaining because I am not the star! And everyone else in the family loves the sauce to go with their rice, so it should be quite good!

The pork tendon is quite crunchy, much to my surprise. I have never eaten it this way before. Is there a lot of collagen inside here to improve my complexion? Hahahahaha

By the time we polished off the above dishes with a bowl of rice each, we had no more space left in our stomachs for their signature dish - braised noodles in banana leaf.

The sauce is a bit too salty. We asked them to pack it into a takeaway box for consumption later. So my mom went back and added some water before heating it up. Then it tastes better. Not so salty.

This is a nice place to bring your parents/grandparents for a good meal for some traditional Chinese food if you have the mood to splurge. The ambience is conducive for family gatherings but I think you need to make a reservation, especially for dinners.

We need more new food places in the neighborhood and liven up Rail Mall! Yay!
