Cafe-Hopping: Jones the Grocer It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon and GB and I headed to town for tea! As we were too sick and tired of shopping in Orchard (because there's no sale and everything else is too over-priced), we found ourselves in Mandarin Gallery - Jones the Grocer! And food is served! We had two macaroons (sea-salt caramel and mango flavours). Both of us are not fans of macaroons but seeing that they only cost $1.50 each, we decided to give it a try. And thanks to these macaroons, I am staying off them for a long time to come. GB had his favorite iced mocha (that came with double scoops of ice cream!!!). I had the traditional hot chocolate with marshmallow. I was actually expected small marshmallows floating on top of the drink, not one chunky piece by the side. And it refused to melt. So this drink didn't work for me =( Lamington Cake Layered-sponge cake with cream and raspberry jam in between. Topped with coconut shreds. We saw another customer having this on her table and decided to give it a try because it looks good. Besides, the choices were pretty limited. Either the tarts or this. The cream and raspberry filling in the centre is really JUST in the centre. A little bit. And that's it. Not evenly spread out. So stingy with the filling…… Lemon Meringue Tart Compared to the one I had at Lola's Cafe, this one is bad. The lemon curd is hardened and tastes more sweet than sour. The meringue on top is really hardened and very sweet too. The pastry wasn't crispy nor soft. It was just like half-baked. I don't know what to say of it. Just mediocre or even below average. Tea time with your best friend can go wrong at times. (not the company. I was referring to the food.) Haha… When you choose all the sweet stuff at one go and get overloaded with sugar, you can forget about eating dinner. Labels: cafe hopping, food galore, friends |
