Cafe-hopping to Rokeby Bistro at Jalan Riang

Sunday, July 6, 2014

It's been a long time since I went for brunch! =)

15-9 Jalan Riang
Singapore 358987
Closed on Mondays
Tues - Sun: 9am - 10pm

We were there early and it was nice to have the whole cafe to ourselves! So much peace and quiet, I like...

Sausage & Bacon Waffles
I think I prefer the thick belgian waffles as opposed to the ones here. Kinda too bare for my liking. And the portion for the sausage and bacon, I'd like a bigger portion please! This is good for small eaters but don't think the sausage satisfied my craving for savory food.

Eggs Royale
The usual poached eggs and smoked salmon, served on brioche and lots of greens. I think poached eggs and hollandaise still go best with English muffins. The sauce seems to be kinda inadequate with the thick brioche.

Skinny Vanilla Latte
Smooth and fragrant, with a dash of vanilla. Just the way I like it! But it seems to cool down pretty fast. Because by the time I was done taking pictures, the drink was lukewarm and not as hot as I'd like.

Iced Mocha

The drinks here are quite good, with some froth to top it off! Yummy.

The staff were really nice to send a small sample of their 2-way Waffle to us!

By 2-way, they mean both sweet and savory on the same waffle. There is spring onion in the waffle batter itself, drizzled with sugar and chunks of banana on top. The orange sauce was really quite special and refreshing. But the spring onion didn't work for me. I love my spring onions, but I think the seasoning of the spring onion went a bit wrong. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Please do give it a try if you like both savory and sweet stuff in one mouthful!

Overall, very nice cafe quietly tucked away in the estates of Serangoon. And I like it that they open early, so that I can enjoy a hearty breakfast to kick-start the day!

Cafe-hopping to Lowercase at Lasalle

Sunday, May 4, 2014

After dinner at Concetto, we adjourned to Lowercase at Lasalle for a chit-chat session. Only to realise that there was some live band performing and we had to shout above the music to talk!

Lowercase
1 McNally St, Blk D
#01-01
Singapore 187940

They serve mains too but we already had our dinner. So desserts it shall be!

Pretty coffee art are always pleasing to the eyes =)

New York Cheesecake

Quite nice but if I don't remember wrongly, the price is kinda steep for such a small piece of cake. I know cakes require a lot of effort, but isn't it better for your reputation if you served bigger portions that make people feel like you have really value-for-money food?

Rainbow Cake

I have a thing for rainbow cakes. Whenever I see one, I just HAVE to order it to try. This one is much lighter than the one at Lynn's Cafe (read about it here) and the cream is pretty good. But isn't this slice of cake TOOOOO thin?!

Ok, I guess I am just paying for the fanciful coloring and rainbow sprinkles. Not the actual cake.

Seriously, too thin la! Hahahaha..

This place is pretty nice to chill if there wasn't a live band performing that day. The high ceilings and spacious communal tables makes it very conducive for group gatherings and project discussions. So jealous of the students at Lasalle! Why didn't someone open a cafe in NTU during my time?

Concetto by Saveur at The Cathay

Thursday, May 1, 2014

I have previously blogged about the popular French restaurant, Saveur, (read about it here) and now we are here to try out its sister restaurant, Concetto!

Concetto by Saveur
The Cathay #01-11/12
2 Handy Road
Singapore 229233

We were there at around 5.30pm on a Saturday evening, so the place was still pretty empty. It isn't really conducive for a romantic candlelit dinner anyway, so turnover is quite fast.

Prawn Aglio (served with sakura ebi) - $10.90

Maybe I don't know how to appreciate Italian food but this looked more like stir fried mee pok with some prawns. Haha! The presentation could be better.

Crab Risotto - $12.90

I have never seen a risotto that looks so "saucy". Ain't risottos supposed to be drier than this? I thought we ordered porridge, at first glance. The rice were a tad overcooked (now it tastes even more like porridge) but otherwise, sauce was okay. The crabmeat is served on a wooden spoon, so don't say they didn't serve crab in your crab risotto k?

Pan seared tuna, baby romaine and honey mustard sauce - $8.90

This one is pretty refreshing but there was too much sesame on the tuna! I like the seared tuna and the mix of salad but the sauce could be lighter, so as not to overwhelm the taste of the whole dish.

Tagliolini, white wine clams and chopped herbs - $11.90

I HAVE to complain about this pasta. I'd call this mee kia boiled with sandy clams. First, the pasta was waaaaayyyyy overcooked. Next, the clams were full of sand!!! I took one bite and had to spit it out coz it was tooooo gross! I immediately called the waiter over and they asked me if I want to change to another dish.

Of course I did! I don't usually say this, but this pasta definitely SUCKS!

Black Risotto (served with two textures of squid) - $10.90

I ordered this risotto and requested for al dente (after our experience with the crab risotto, we have learnt to request for al dente and give the risotto a second chance). Now this is much better.

But the sauce is still wayyyy too much! The squid served with crispy rice cake bits were good. But my rice was swimming in the black sauce!!! I could drink the sauce as soup if I wanted to.

My dinner date - Adele!

We haven't met for almost half a year because of each other's busy schedules and traveling. It was so good catching up with her and there are some friends that you don't have to meet often but they will always be on my mind and Adele's one of them!

My pretty babeh! =D

I won't be coming back to Concetto anymore. Though they set the prices below your average Italian cuisine, the quality of the food is below average too. Nah, just not worth a second visit.

Food Galore: Korean Food at Damotory Korean Wine House

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

A long long time ago, we met up with my pretty girlfriend, Xiuling, for korean food at Robertson Walk!

I think there was an important soccer match going on that night, so everyone were outdoors. Indoors was quite empty and peaceful.

Damotory Korean Wine House
Roberton Walk
Singapore 237995

This girl dressed up specially for our date night! So touched! Pretty right?

This place doesn't serve water or tea. Buy your wine!

We had the yoghurt rice wine which didn't really taste of yoghurt at all. Don't ask me why. I think there are better rice wines out there.

The pathetic side dishes.

Only preserved radish and anchovies! Where's my kimchi?!!

Bibimbap

It was between bibimbap or the kimchi fried rice. We chose this in the end because we thought that there'd be more 料 but the portion turned out quite small.

There were some crispy bits and it's quite nice, albeit the small serving.

Stir-fried chicken

This dish costs $18 I think. The chicken was coated with some honey if my memory didn't fail me. It's pretty tasty with the cashew nuts and some bits of capsicum. You definitely can't eat this as a main though, not filling without any carbo. Haha!

Korean cold noodles (Naeng Myun)

I quite like this for sharing because the cold soup was very refreshing and the noodles still retained its springy texture.

Maybe a little too much for one person (unless you are a fan of cold noodles?). Sharing for three is just nice =)

Army Stew (Budae Jigae)

Nowhere like the real thing from Korea, so it was a bit of disappointment. No ramen and the pot was quite small. Too spicy for my liking.

The authentic budae jigae is served in a big pot over a fire and you can add in more SPAM ham, bean sprouts, rice cakes and ramen anytime you like! Damn, I miss Seoul!!

Someone bring me back there please!!!!

After an expensive dinner (I think the meal costs about $110 for three of us, which is quite expensive given the portions and quality of the food), we adjourned to the TCC nearby for drinks and more heart-to-heart talks!

That night we chatted till 12 midnight and everyone was really exhausted! It was such a nice catch-up with Xiuling and girl, if you are reading this, let's do this again soon!

And hor, I think the budae jigae you made for my birthday last year was much nicer la! Can we have it again sometime soon? Pretty please?

Have a safe and enjoyable trip to Taiwan and we will see you when you are back! =)
