Sausage & Bacon Waffles I think I prefer the thick belgian waffles as opposed to the ones here. Kinda too bare for my liking. And the portion for the sausage and bacon, I'd like a bigger portion please! This is good for small eaters but don't think the sausage satisfied my craving for savory food.
Eggs Royale The usual poached eggs and smoked salmon, served on brioche and lots of greens. I think poached eggs and hollandaise still go best with English muffins. The sauce seems to be kinda inadequate with the thick brioche.
Skinny Vanilla Latte Smooth and fragrant, with a dash of vanilla. Just the way I like it! But it seems to cool down pretty fast. Because by the time I was done taking pictures, the drink was lukewarm and not as hot as I'd like.
Iced Mocha
The drinks here are quite good, with some froth to top it off! Yummy.
The staff were really nice to send a small sample of their 2-way Waffle to us!
By 2-way, they mean both sweet and savory on the same waffle. There is spring onion in the waffle batter itself, drizzled with sugar and chunks of banana on top. The orange sauce was really quite special and refreshing. But the spring onion didn't work for me. I love my spring onions, but I think the seasoning of the spring onion went a bit wrong. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Please do give it a try if you like both savory and sweet stuff in one mouthful!
Overall, very nice cafe quietly tucked away in the estates of Serangoon. And I like it that they open early, so that I can enjoy a hearty breakfast to kick-start the day!

We always like to grab a quick brunch before heading to China Square Central for a long day ahead. I like to think of it as a small way to reward myself for the hard work!
A few weeks ago, we were quickly running out of places to go for Sunday brunch places that open before 11am. Selfish Gene Cafe was our choice for the day!
It was pretty quiet when we went, much to our surprise. I was expecting full house with no seats. Chairs ain't really comfy but that's all the same with most cafes in Singapore, no?
Iced mocha
I like my chocolate syrup all blended into the coffee instead of coating it around the glass. So this drink didn't work for me.
Signature Carrot Cake
Now, this cake pushed all the right buttons in me. It was all warmed up and the texture was just right. The cream with shaved nuts went down well with the moist cake. I would come back again for this! But JUST for this.
Scrambled eggs on brioche
Wah, this dish is soooooo expensive for just scrambled eggs and brioche! There is REALLY nothing other than what you see. No hidden ham or smoked salmon or whatever. Ok, scrambled eggs were moist but the brioche? NOTHING.
Ok, I am getting sick of cafes soon. Shall we explore other types of cuisine?
Like most Singaporeans, we always head out for brunch on weekend mornings before we start off the day. I believe that a good breakfast will set the right tone for the rest of the day! Besides, I can eat all the calorie-laden food in the morning because I have the whole day to burn it off!
(good excuse to eat without feeling guilty)
The place is quite small and packed on a Saturday morning. Better to make a reservation before you go.
Most of the brunch items come with a drink, hence the slightly steeper prices.
Cafe Mocha - don't expect any coffee art here. Don't think they specialize in that.
Eggs Royale!
Generous serving of smoked salmon (I like!) and the eggs were huge. Good stuff.
Smoked Salmon sandwich
There was honey mustard coated on the soft focaccia bread which made the whole sandwich super yummy! Complemented with a hard boiled egg and fresh greens.
My Eggs Royale came with a juice and a hot drink (of your choice) and a dessert (choose from macaroons, creme brûlée or chocolate mousse). They were sold out on the macaroons and creme brûlée (or maybe they didn't even make it that day) and I don't like chocolate mousse. The waiter kindly let me change to another dessert in the cake display area and I chose this apple pie!
Very thinly sliced, but at least there were lots of apples!
The place is pretty accessible, just beside Coronation Plaza where lots of buses pass by. If you are driving, you can park along the road (with proper lot marking) beside the landed property. Be sure to head there earlier because many parents drop their kids off at the tuition centers in Coronation Plaza and head out for brunch nearby.
It was a very sunny weekend and we braved the heat to get here! We saw that it was almost full house outdoors and got worried for a moment that we won't get any indoor table.
But somehow, most people there loved it outdoors (good for us so I am not complaining) and we got our indoor table! Yay!
And food is served! I was on an #eatingclean diet (which means no fried food and no meats, where possible) so I had the granola with yoghurt and fruits. We had the banana waffles with mascarpone cheese to share. I know that I am on an diet, but how can you step out of a cafe without indulging in some good food?!

The waffles were supposed to be crispy and warm but I guess by the time I finished taking pictures, it turned cold already.
Nice to look at, not really nice to eat.

It's a nice place and the staff are all rather friendly with prompt service! If not for the heat and the loud British women beside us, the meal would have been much more enjoyable!
